The Complete Guide to Lifting Accessories & Rigging Equipment

Whether you're lifting steel beams on a construction site, moving heavy machinery in a workshop, or managing a busy warehouse — the right lifting accessories and rigging equipment make all the difference. This guide breaks it all down in plain language so you can lift safely, confidently, and get the job done right.

WHY RIGGING EQUIPMENT MATTERS

Rigging is the process of connecting a load to a lifting device — such as a crane, chain hoist, or forklift. The accessories used to make that connection are just as important as the lifting equipment itself. Using undersized or incorrect rigging hardware is one of the leading causes of load drops and serious workplace injuries.

The good news is that once you understand the core product categories, selecting the right gear becomes much more straightforward. Here's everything you need to know.

💡 KEY TERM TO KNOW

Always check the Working Load Limit (WLL) — also called the Safe Working Load (SWL) — marked on every piece of rigging hardware before use. Never exceed it under any circumstances.

ESSENTIAL LIFTING ACCESSORIES: WHAT THEY ARE & WHEN TO USE THEM

Chain Slings

Chain slings are one of the most durable and widely used lifting accessories available. They are heat-resistant, abrasion-resistant, and extremely strong — making them ideal for steel fabrication, foundries, and heavy industrial environments.

  • Suitable for high-temperature environments where synthetic slings would be damaged

  • Can be used in single-leg, two-leg, three-leg, or four-leg configurations

  • Repairable and long-lasting with proper maintenance

Web Slings & Straps

Web slings are made from woven polyester and are lightweight, flexible, and gentle on load surfaces. They are ideal when you need to protect finished goods, machinery, or loads with painted or polished surfaces.

  • Available in flat web, round (endless loop), and twisted eye styles

  • Colour-coded by capacity for easy identification on site

  • Not suitable for sharp edges (use edge protectors) or high-heat environments

  • Inspect before every use — cuts or UV degradation reduce capacity significantly

Wire Rope Slings

Wire rope slings offer excellent strength combined with flexibility. They perform well in abrasive environments and are commonly used in construction, mining, and marine applications.

  • More resistant to abrasion than synthetic slings

  • Can be fitted with different end terminations (hooks, shackles, thimbles)

  • Inspect regularly for broken wires, kinking, and corrosion

  • Retire immediately if 10% or more wires are broken in any section

Shackles

Shackles are the critical connector between your sling and the lifting point or hook. Choosing the right shackle type and rating is essential to a safe lift.

  • Bow shackles (omega shackles) — best for multi-leg slings or angular loads

  • Dee shackles — designed for in-line loads only

  • Safety pin shackles — include a locking mechanism to prevent accidental opening

  • Always match shackle WLL to or above the total load weight

Lifting Hooks

Hooks connect the hoist or crane to the rigging. Always select a hook with a safety latch to prevent accidental load release.

  • Swivel hooks allow rotation to prevent rope twist during lifts

  • Clevis hooks pin directly to chain or other hardware

  • Eye hooks attach via a welded or forged eye to a ring or shackle

  • Check hooks for deformation, cracks, or throat opening beyond 15% of original size

Eye Bolts & Swivel Hoist Rings

Eye bolts and hoist rings are attached directly to the load to create a secure lifting point. Swivel hoist rings are strongly preferred over standard eye bolts for most applications because they rotate and pivot to accommodate any lift angle without losing capacity.

  • Standard eye bolts lose significant WLL when loaded at an angle — never use them at more than 45° without a significant de-rating

  • Swivel rings maintain full capacity at any angle — ideal for complex or angular lifts

  • Always torque eye bolts to the manufacturer's specification before lifting

RIGGING HARDWARE & COMPONENTS

Beyond slings and hooks, a complete rigging kit includes a range of structural hardware components. Here's what's commonly used and why:

Turnbuckles — Used to tension wire rope or chain between two points. Available in jaw/jaw, hook/eye, and eye/eye configurations. Always check WLL and ensure both ends are secured before applying load.

Wire Rope Clips — Used to terminate wire rope ends. The U-bolt must always go on the dead (short) end of the rope. Use the correct quantity and spacing as specified by the manufacturer.

Spreader Beams — Distribute a load across multiple lift points to keep slings vertical and reduce compression forces. Specify capacity and span length carefully.

Load Binders (Chain Binders) — Used to secure loads on flatbed transport. Ratchet binders offer more controlled tensioning than lever binders and are recommended for most applications.

⚠️ SAFETY REMINDER

Never use rigging hardware that shows signs of cracks, deformation, corrosion, or illegible WLL markings. Remove damaged equipment from service immediately and replace it before the next lift.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT RIGGING SETUP

Not sure where to start? Run through this checklist before specifying any rigging equipment:

Know your load weight — This is your starting point. Your rigging system's weakest component must meet or exceed the total load weight.

Account for sling angle — Sling capacity drops significantly at angles below 60° from horizontal. Always use a sling angle factor or calculator when lifts aren't perfectly vertical.

Consider the load's surface — Use web slings for delicate or painted surfaces. Use chain or wire rope slings for rough, sharp, or hot loads.

Decide on lift configuration — Single-leg, two-leg, three-leg, and four-leg configurations each affect how the load is distributed. Multi-leg slings increase stability but require careful angle management.

Factor in the environment — Outdoor, marine, chemical, or high-heat environments all affect material choice. Stainless steel hardware is recommended for corrosive conditions.

Check compliance requirements — All rigging equipment should meet SANS or equivalent recognised standards applicable to your region and industry.

MAINTENANCE & INSPECTION BEST PRACTICES

Even the highest quality rigging equipment can fail if it isn't maintained properly. Make these habits part of your standard operating procedure:

  • Inspect all slings and hardware visually before every lift — look for cuts, kinks, corrosion, distortion, and missing markings

  • Store slings and rigging hardware in a clean, dry environment away from chemicals, heat sources, and direct UV light

  • Lubricate chain slings regularly with a light oil to prevent rust and maintain flexibility between links

  • Conduct formal, documented inspections at least every 12 months — more frequently under heavy-use conditions

  • Mark damaged or suspect equipment clearly and quarantine it from your working gear immediately

  • Maintain a rigging equipment register that records WLL ratings, purchase dates, inspection history, and any incidents
